In Romance of the Three KingdomsEdit

Before the BattleEdit

Main article: Campaign against Dong Zhuo

In 190 A.D. local tyrannical warlord Dong Zhuo 董卓 seized the Han capital, Luoyang and caused tyranny around the state. Cao Cao saw this big threat, and formed a new coaliton with Yuan Shao as the coalition leader to abolish Dong Zhuo.

The BattleEdit

Main article: Three Sworn Brothers Duel Lü Bu

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, Lü Bu was sent by Dong Zhuo to block the coalition to past through. Mu Shun 穆順 was the first one to duel Lü Bu, but Lü Bu slayed Mu Shun without a few bouts. Many of the generals could not defeat Lü Bu, including Gongsun Zan, who almost got killed by Lü Bu, but suddenly Zhang Fei 張飛 showed up and dueled Lü Bu. Many of the coalition members were surprised that Zhang Fei could stand a chance against the mighty Lü Bu. After many bouts, Zhang Fei's sworn brothers Guan Yu and Liu Bei 劉備 offered to join the battle. It was now three against one. Lü Bu couldn't duel the three brothers at once and took off with his Red Hare Horse. Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, and Guan Yu pursued Lü Bu, but Lü Bu's Red Hare horse was a fast steed, and the three brothers could not catch him.

Historical informationEdit

In historical sources, the Battle of Hulao Pass did not exist. It was a completely fictional event created by Romance of the Three Kingdoms creator, Luo Guanzhong.

  • The Battle of Hulao Pass was not fortified until the early Tang Dynasty
  • Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei did not fight in the fictional Battle of Hulao Pass, nor they participated in the Campaign against Dong Zhuo. They were fighting under Gongsun Zan in the North East.

What happened historically?Edit

  • Historically, the battle at Hulao Pass never took place.
  • Historically, Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei never dueled Lü Bu at once in the fictional Battle of Hulao Pass.
